abstract = "The present work has the objective to use a sampling square method
to estimate sugarcane crop area in S{\~a}o Paulo State, Brazil. A
sugarcane thematic map obtained from multitemporal Landsat images
classification was used as reference data and to stratify the
State area into eight sugarcane area densities (0-13, 13-21,
                         21-31, 31-54, 54-74, 74-85, 85-95 and >95%) within 1 x 1 km
segments. A probabilistic technique was used to determine four
sample rates representing 0.07, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.4% of the study
area which were randomly sampled one hundred times. The sugarcane
area for each sample was evaluated based on the reference data
map. The one hundred estimates for each sample rate were then
compared with the reference data for the entire study area. Best
results were obtained for the 0,3% sample rate (412 segments) were
the relative difference of the area estimation was around
\2% with a coefficient of variation lower than 2%,
indicating that this method is not only suitable to accurate
estimate sugarcane at State level but it is also an appropriate
alternative for early forecast or when cloud free images are not
                         available.",
